Newly-elected ladies bowls president Rita Kling is looking forward to a big 2018.

The new committee was elected earlier this month and is preparing for a busy year with a packed calendar.

“I’m really pleased with the new committee,” Kling said.

She took over the presidency mid-way through this year after the incumbent president left town.

The new committee is: Kay Hurtz (secretary), Judy Richardson (junior vice president), Rita Kling (president), Fay Bohn (selector), Elana Scott (selector), Chris Morris (selector), Helen Shepherd (senior vice president) and Marlene Feltis (selector).

“I’m really looking forward to working with them and having a very good year,” Kling said, adding that in the small clubs you need to have the support of the committee. She feels she has that.

She said the club has welcomed a number of new members this year. The decision to allow men to join the Wednesday morning ladies bowls has also proved a success.

“It’s boosted our numbers and it’s filled the greens up,” she said.

Kling instigated a vote at last years annual general meeting for the men to play with the ladies and after starting out with just a few they are getting 11 and 12 now turning up to play with them.

“What we do is we put all the names in a bucket so it comes out mixed,” she said.

The club will also be embracing the festive spirit next week.

On Wednesday members will unite with members from the local golf club for game of bocce.

“We do it annually,” Kling said.

They mix the teams up with bowlers and golfers, and the clubs alternate hosting the lunch. This year it is the bowls club’s turn.

“It is a bit of fun,” Kling said.

“We dress up for Christmas and have punch in the park.”

It will be a busy week for the club. On Monday they’ll host the Southern Downs District Ladies Bowls Association agm.

Nominations meanwhile close on December 13 for the ladies A grade singles, which will be held in the new year.

It will be one of a few big events early in 2018 for the club with the women’s committee putting on the morning tea for the annual Australia Day carnival.

Then on February 14 the women have got their presidents and members day, which will involve clubs from around the district.
