Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident this afternoon.

The collision happened on the Midland Highway when two vehicles, a 4x4 Toyota Hilux and a light rigid truck, collided head-on about 1.45pm.

The male driver and sole occupant of the car died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a man from Stewarton, was flown to a Melbourne hospital with serious injuries.

UPDATE, 4pm: Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks, who is at the crash scene, said the crash was between a four-wheel drive ute and a light-rigid truck on the Midland Highway just south of Goornong.

Senior Sergeant Brooks said the only occupant of the ute was a man who has died.

The driver of the truck has been air lifted to hospital in Melbourne with serious but non-life threatening injuries to his chest and legs.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation and have some witness who are helping us with inquiries,” Senior Sergeant Brooks.

“There are numerous factors that we will be looking into and the weather is certainly one of them.”

Senior Sergeant Brooks said drivers should adjust their driving to the weather conditions.

“It is not going to be any less onerous to slow down,” he said.

“Just drive to the conditions and slow down. The weather is bad and won’t get better for another 24 hours.

“So pay attention to where you are and what you’re doing.”

It is expected road blocks on the Midland Highway will remain in place for at least another hour while police complete their investigations.
